MUSHEGH ISHKHAN (Tchenteretchyan Mushegh) was born in 1914, in  Sivrihisar (Vilayet of Ankara). An Armenian writer, cultural figure. He was among the ones who were exiled to Deir ez-Zor. Mushegh Ishkan graduated from the Armenian National College of Damascus in 1928, Armenian Seminary in Beirut in 1935, attended courses in pedagogy and literature at the University of Brussels in 1938-1940. He was the editor of “Azdag” newspaper in Beirut in 1941-45 and also taught at the Armenian seminary of Beirut.

The struggle of Armenians in exile against the danger of assimilation lies in the basis of Mushegh Iskhan’s works. He is the author of lyrical poems, “The Song of the Homes” (1936), “Armenia” (1946), “Life and Dream” (1949), “Golden Autumn” (1963), “Affliction” (1968). His plays, such as “It’s so difficult to die” (1971), “The Man from the Refrigerator” (1979), “Plays” (1980) were a new phenomenon in the Armenian literature in their structure and thinking. A variety of national, historical, psychological, social and moral issues are discussed in these works.

Mushegh Ishkan’s plays, "The King of Cilicia" (1989) and “It’s so difficult to die” (1992) were staged in Yerevan. His prose includes the novels “For Bread and Light” (1951), “For Bread and Love” (1956), “Farewell, childhood” (1974), and the novella “The Wait” (1977). He is also the author of Modern Armenian Literature (three-volume) textbook. Mushegh Ishkhan died on June 12, 1990.

The school № 5 in Yerevan was named after Mushegh Ishkhan. His museum is situated at school.
