TSERENTS (Shishmanyan Hovsep) was born on September 16, in 1822  in Constantinople. An Armenian writer and publicist. He graduated from the University of Pisa in Italy (1852). In 1846 Tserents entered the medical faculty of the Sorbonne University and at the same time taught at school Murad Rafaelyan. In 1849, together with N.Rusinyan and others he founded the Student Union "Araratian". In 1853, he participated in the elaboration of the Constitution in Constantinople. In the 1860s he launched political activities, was involved in national-liberation struggle of the Armenian people. He wrote historical novels ("Toros son of Levon," 1877 "Theodoros Rshtuni", 1881), which depicted the Armenians’ struggle for independence and liberation of their motherland. Political dream and social ideals of Tserents were based on the ideas of the European Enlightenment of the 18th century.
