ZARYAN (Ghazanjyan Ruben)  was born on September 1(14), 1909 in Alexandrapol (now Gyumri). A literary critic, specialist in theatre, pedagogue. Doctor in Arts (1962), Professor (1963), ASSR Honoured Art worker (1961). He graduated from Yerevan State University in 1936. Head of the fiction department of Haypethrat in 1938-74, the editor of "Soviet literature" magazine in 1941-43, founder of Art Institute of ASSR Academy of Sciences in 1958-87. His works are devoted to the history of the Armenian theater and the art of acting, he is the author of the memoirs, too. Zaryan established library of Shakespeare studies (1964), Center for Shakespeare Studies (1966) at the Art Institute. Associate professor of German Shakespeare Society (1970), head of the arts and architecture RA State Awards Commission (1971–84). RA State Prize (1981).

R. Zaryan died on February 2, 1994 in Yerevan.
